Bench Press Exercise Guide
The bench press is a classic upper-body strength and muscle-building exercise that primarily trains the chest while also involving the triceps and front deltoids.
Bench Press Setup
Set your upper back firmly against the bench, keep your feet planted, use a stable grip and lower the bar under control toward the chest. Press back to the starting position while maintaining a strong, controlled position.
Muscles Worked
- Chest — primary muscle
- Triceps — secondary pressing muscle
- Front deltoids — secondary shoulder involvement
Common Bench Press Mistakes
Common problems include excessive arching, uncontrolled bar movement, elbows flaring too far outward and bouncing the bar off the chest. Good technique should remain controlled even as the weight becomes challenging.
Bench Press Sets and Reps
Lower-repetition sets can emphasize strength, moderate rep ranges are commonly used for muscle building, and higher-repetition sets can be useful when using lighter loads and controlled technique.
Joint-Friendly Alternatives
Lifters whose shoulders do not tolerate the traditional barbell bench press well may prefer dumbbells, a neutral grip, incline pressing or a Smith machine. The best exercise is one you can perform effectively and consistently without aggravating pain.
